    Long-term Investigation of Annulargrams and Intra-annular Fibrin to Treat Chronic Discogenic Low Back Pain and Radiculopathy

    People who had already failed other treatments were followed for one, two, and three years after fibrin was placed in disc tears. Pain and function scores improved at each year. At 12 months, 50% reached a meaningful improvement on the disability questionnaire (ODI). No severe side effects were reported. Average pain before treatment: 11.2 years.

    Intradiscal injection of fibrin sealant for the treatment of symptomatic lumbar internal disc disruption

    A 15-person pilot of fibrin injected into painful lumbar discs. Average back-pain score (0–100) fell from 72.4 to 33.0 at two years. Disability score fell from 15.2 to 5.6. The authors said it appears safe and may improve pain and function. Nine people reported some side effect; two muscle spasms and one disc infection were judged related to the product or procedure.

    Treatment of annular disc tears and “leaky disc syndrome” with fibrin sealant

    The authors asked whether fibrin can glue a tear in the disc wall. In a pressure test of 347 discs, mean pressure the disc could hold rose from 75.84 to 179.3 kilopascals after fibrin. They write that sealing the tear can keep the inner disc gel from leaking. Average number of abnormal lumbar discs in that chronic-pain group: 3.21.

    A textbook chapter — not a new patient trial. It describes the Discseel Procedure as two steps: find tears with an Annulargram, then inject fibrin into every torn disc in the painful region.

    Biological and biomechanical effects of fibrin injection into porcine intervertebral discs

    Lab study in 31 minipigs, not a patient trial. Fibrin was injected into surgically damaged pig discs. Treated discs recovered stiffness and leak pressure toward normal by 6 and 12 weeks and made less of an inflammatory chemical (TNF-α: 66% vs 226% in damaged discs without fibrin).

    Fibrin sealants in lumbar annuloplasty after endoscopic discectomy

    Thirty-five people had endoscopic disc surgery; 17 also got fibrin on the tear. Follow-up averaged 10.5 months. Re-herniation: 1 of 18 without fibrin, 2 of 17 with fibrin. The authors still suggested fibrin might help prevent early re-herniation. This is not a Discseel Procedure trial.

    A review of lab and animal papers, not a patient trial. The authors say fibrin can keep disc cells alive and help them make new disc matrix. As of 2014 they wrote that human disc cells had not yet been used with fibrin in a clinical trial.

    Lab study, not a patient trial. Higher fibrin concentration helped cells live and multiply. Adding hyaluronic acid helped them make more of the sugar-rich matrix found in the disc center.
