VA and the Pentagon look to take advantage of a new spinal procedure for those injured in the line of duty
Federal News Network reported that a contract awarded to Discseel® Technologies by the Veterans Affairs Department tasks the company with training physicians to perform a non-surgical spine procedure at Department of Defense and V.A. hospitals in the United States and overseas. The piece is an interview with Dr. Kevin Pauza, identified there as creator of the Discseel procedure and Chief Medical Adviser and Director of Discseel® Technologies. In the interview he says the VA and Department of Defense signed an agreement that allows him to train physicians and nursing staff, and that it pays for the procedure in full for any veteran or active or non-active member of the Department of Defense.

Discseel: No spinal fusion needed
WAFB ran an Ivanhoe Newswire story on the Discseel procedure as an option besides spinal fusion. It quotes triathlete Neil Bar, who the story says had an annular tear, and sports medicine specialist Brian Shiple, DO, who recommended Discseel. The story says fibrin is injected into the damaged disc and is used off-label to repair discs. It also states the procedure was not covered by insurance and, as of that 2022 report, cost between $14,500 and $15,500 out of pocket.

ADDICTED: Doctor performing ground-breaking procedure to treat back pain without opioids
WZTV reported on the Discseel procedure as an option besides opioids. The story names Dr. Brandon Tolman and patient Rachel Sloan. It says Dr. Tolman injects fibrin into discs, which the station compared to “fix a flat,” and quotes him saying some of his patients had come off opioids. The story also said Discseel was not covered by insurance at that time.

Spectrum News 1 reported that the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs awarded contract approval to Discseel Technologies so physicians can train on the Discseel Procedure. The story quotes Dr. Kevin Pauza, whom it calls chief medical adviser and director of Discseel Technologies, and Ohio physician Dr. Boris Terebuh. It describes fibrin used to seal disc cracks and notes the procedure is done in a physician’s office.
